Geothermal Greenhouse Solutions

UK Food Security & Geothermal Agriculture

At London Geothermal Consortium, we confront the UK's food security challenge head-on, combining decades of worldwide geothermal and greenhouse expertise to transform food production.

Food Security in the UK

  •  The UK is facing growing food insecurity: around 10 million people lack consistent access to affordable nutritious food. Meanwhile, a staggering 12.8 million tonnes of food are wasted annually—enough to account for 6–7 % of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions.    Financial Times
  • Domestic self-sufficiency on fruits and vegetables is limited, and climate extremes are projected to reduce key crop production by 8 % or more.   The Guardian & Financial Times

Geothermal’s Untapped Potential for Food Security

  •  While deep and shallow geothermal are proven for residential and district heating in the UK, their use in food production systems—like greenhouses—is still avant-garde. Technologically mature systems such as low-temperature GSHPs and deep geothermal existed, but haven't been widely deployed in agriculture yet. House of Lords Library
  •  A pioneering Geothermal Glasshouse R&D facility in Lincoln is now emerging, aiming to model low-carbon food production systems powered by subsurface heat. news.lincoln.ac.uk

At 50 °C and 75 L/s, a single deep-geothermal well pair delivers ~3.1 MWₜₕ (ΔT 10 K) — enough for ~2.8–3.0 ha at UK design winter. Add a second pair or increase ΔT to 15 K and you’re at ~4.7 MWₜₕ (~4.3 ha).  Modular well pairs + a 5th-Gen low-temp loop scale this to organised 20–50 ha greenhouse zones.

Why Food Security Matters in the UK

Why Food Security Matters in the UK

Why Food Security Matters in the UK

  • Over 10 million people face food insecurity.
  • The UK imports most of its fruits and vegetables from distant tropical climates — adding hidden carbon emissions from transport.
  • Climate change is projected to reduce yields by 8 % or more.

Solution: Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) powered by geothermal & GSHP systems offers local, low-carbon, year-round food production.

Challenges for UK Growers

Why Food Security Matters in the UK

Why Food Security Matters in the UK

  • High heating costs in winter (LPG, gas, biomass).
  • Excess heat stress in summer.
  • High carbon emissions → export barriers in “green-labeled” markets.
  • Condensation & humidity → plant diseases.
  • Night ventilation losses and temperature instability.

GSHP Advantages for Greenhouses

Why Food Security Matters in the UK

GSHP Advantages for Greenhouses

  • 60–80% lower energy costs with COP 4–5.
  • Passive cooling from 10–18 °C ground temperature — protects crops in summer.
  • Net Zero ready greenhouses when combined with solar PV.
  • Silent operation (no noisy outdoor units).
  • Temperature stability within ±0.5 °C → higher yield & quality.
  • Carbon credits: 30–40 €/tCO₂ additional income potential.

Why Deep Geothermal + Heat Pumps is the Future

The UK Government’s Future of the Subsurface annex lays out a pragmatic view:

  • UK gradients mean geothermal is ideally suited to heating (direct-use and low-temp networks), while shallow geothermal/GSHP is feasible almost anywhere and already deployed (~43,700 GSHPs in 2021). GOV.UK
  • Deep hot sedimentary aquifers (≈ 40–60 °C) are well-matched to direct space/industrial heating; the best opportunities co-locate heat sources with high, local heat demand — horticulture/greenhouses explicitly noted as a use case. GOV.UK
  • Big upside: decarbonising heat (≈17% of UK emissions) via geothermal at scale; key barriers remain regulatory complexity, data gaps, and capital cost — all manageable with bankable project structures. GOV.UK

Policy & incentives you can actually use

  • Green Heat Network Fund (England): Capital support for low-carbon heat networks; geothermal heat qualifies. Ideal for deep-geo + 5G loop serving greenhouse parks and adjacent users. GOV.UK
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme (England & Wales): £7,500 grants per GSHP for eligible buildings — useful for ancillary spaces (packing, offices, worker housing) on a greenhouse estate. GOV.UK

A hybrid model — deep geothermal for base heat + ATES/BTES + 5th-Gen loop + selective GSHP lift — delivers year-round climate control, export-grade low carbon intensity, and scalable clusters from 2 ha modules to 50 ha+ greenhouse precincts.

We offer complimentary assessments for policymakers, farmers, and investors.
